In 1979, George Dreyfus arrived in America from France. Despite his background in mechanical engineering, he spoke little English but learned quickly. His entrepreneurial spirit compelled him to make the United States his second home. Dreyfus arrived in Austin, Texas where he met his wife and owned several businesses. Eventually, he combined his love of French history and furniture restoration to create Dreyfus Antiques.
Dreyfus, born in Paris, returns to France about every three months in search of exquisite 18th and 19th century French country armoires, tables, tapestries, light fixtures, leather chairs and more. From Pujols sur Ciron, where he maintains a residence, Dreyfus travels to Bordeaux, then Aix-en-Provence, and onto Paris' "Aux Puces," the city's largest and most important antique market.
Interestingly, the Dreyfus family has a long history in home furnishings. In 1875, Dreyfus' great-grandfather made his living as a furniture maker in Paris. Dreyfus quips that what his ancestor sold as new, he sells as antiques.
